Besides the loss of his family and possessions, what did Pi lose when the Tsimtsum sank? What did he gain?
Through all of the things Pi lost after the ship had sunk, he managed to hang onto his faith. Never throughout the story, despite staring into the life sucking face of a deserted oblivion, did Pi lose his will to live. I suppose you could say that our friend Pi had gained an outrageous life experience from this adventure, perhaps a tale to be passed on for ages. -Ethan
Pi lost all of his possesions and family when the ship sank.Pi also lost his feelings of safety when his ship sank. But he created a new meaning to the word faith. He never lost his faith and he even prayed everyday when most of us would have just given up and waited to die.He also gained the true will to live. After witnessing 3 animals be killed, having no food, drinking blood,and even going blind he never gave up his faiths. -Dominique
When the Tsimtsum sank, Pi lost everything he held dear: family, possessions and a sense of innocence. He lost he naivety of just gaining knowledge of things such as religion and animals; he had to face a new challenge of which he could not have known before the accident. Pi gained not only an experience, but a lifetime story that can (in essence) define his life and the choices he made after he spent hundreds of days at sea. -Jenna
The loss of Pi's family and possessions was quite a depressing thing when the Tsimtsum sank. What suprised me was how, after being through all this mayhem, he still held his convictions more dear to him than anything. Pi would pray almost thirty percent of the day. That is quite an attatchment to his faith. Everyday there would be something new that he could complain about, but he just prayed all his complications away. -Dave
Pi lost his entire family when the boat sank. He did not have anyone to help him through the ordeal, that was why Richard Parker was so important to him. Pi called him over to the boat and helped him. Pi fed him and trained him, all because Pi was afraid to be alone. And through out the adventure the two of them became comrades. Richard Parker protected Pi form the guy trying to strangle him. When the ship sank Pi gained a comrade. But the real constant for Pi was his faith, all three of his faiths. He never once stopped believing in any of them. -Diana

I believe he gained a strong faith in God and even in himself. He was able to survive horrible circumstances, which he owes to God. Pi lost the ability to follow everything that he had believed in. He could no longer be a vegetarian because all he had to eat was turtles, fish and sharks. He lost his faith for parts of the journey. He did not have his prayer rug or the places where he was used to practicing his faith. Although he lost some ability to follow the faiths that he held, he quickly gained faith back in other aspects. He no longer worried about having a place to practice his faith. He began to believe that faith was about believing even in hard situations. ~Megan
